About Bangladesh

Bangladesh is located in South Asia on the Bay of Bengal and is bordered by India and Myanmar (Burma). Prior to 1971 the country was known as East Pakistan. Today, Bangladesh is an independent republic with a total area of 144,000 km2, and a population of more than 147 million people. Since independence, Bangladesh has enjoyed substantial economic growth and today the government pursues a liberal market economy policy.

The people of Bangladesh are known for their friendliness and intense curiosity. The country is also famous for its mysteriousness, beautiful temples, colourful bazaars, impressive mosques, spectacular nature and rich animal life. Bangladesh is home to countless animals including the Bengal tiger, various kinds of deer, crocodiles, wild boars, many species of snakes and a wide variety of birds.
